But the option to promote has disappeared and I fear losing him

When did you last renew his contract? If it was less than 21 days ago you won't get a 'promote' option.

Yes, contact renewed 10 days ago (trying to squeeze those last 2 rating points out of him!)
But I?ve never seen the promote option disappear before
I guess I?ll have to await another few days and it?ll hopefully reappear
